Tour Description
Do you want to relive the days of the Gold Rush? Let us take you on a fascinating journey
back in time to the historical town of Oatman, Arizona. Tucked into the rough ramparts of
the Black Mountains, this small, picturesque town has a present day population of
approximately 125 people, but draws an estimated 500,000 tourists each year.
Well pick you up at your Las Vegas hotel for the approximate 2.5-hour
air-conditioned drive to historic Oatman. Well stop in Laughlin to drop off our
group who is headed to gamble for the day and to enjoy a complimentary buffet lunch that
is always included at one of the local Laughlin resorts. Your driver-guide will keep you
entertained with narration of the passing scenery and stories of Oatman. Well be
there before you know it!
Named for a pioneering family killed by Apache Indians, Oatmans peak population was
over 10,000 in the days when 50 mines operated in the district. The boomtown prospered,
and in 1917 had seven hotels, 20 saloons and even a stock exchange. The mines produced
nearly two million ounces of gold before their closure in the 1930's. The population
dwindled, but the town was kept alive as a travelers stop on Americas Main
Street Route 66. Fire has destroyed many of the old buildings of Oatman, but
several structures and interesting mines have survived.
Well take you on an approximate 30-minute guided tour of one of the Oatman Gold
Mines. Hear true stories about the mines from a former miner, who will lead the way. After
your gold mine tour, take about an hour to explore the streets of Oatman on your own.
Oatman is a quaint tourist attraction known for its arts, crafts, and antique shops, and
for the burros that roam the streets. You will undoubtedly meet the towns semi-wild
burros, who are descendants of the gold miners pack animals. The burros wander in
from the desert every morning to be pampered, photographed, and fed by tourists.
Oatmans colorful streets have been a popular setting for many movies and TV
Westerns, and are now the site of weekend cowboy gunfights and showdowns staged for the
tourists. The rickety Oatman Hotel on Main Street is the oldest two-story adobe building
in Mohave County. Originally built in 1902, it has survived three major fires. The hotel
has displays of old movie posters, theater costumes, and gold miners' memorabilia
scattered throughout its upstairs rooms. Room 15 has the distinction of being the
honeymoon room where Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent the night after their wedding
ceremony in Kingman on March 29, 1939.
After about 2 hours in Oatman, well head back to pick up our friends in Laughlin and
make an approximate 45-minute stop there. Spend a few minutes gambling or just stretch
your legs. Then it's back to reality, the bustling city life and glittering lights of the
Las Vegas Strip!
Your professional driver-guide will keep you entertained with his knowledge about the
history and highlights of historic Oatman and the Gold rush days. Your luxury motor coach
is equipped with large vista windows, so you won't miss a thing. Air conditioning,
restrooms and video capabilities ensure you a comfortable and enjoyable ride.
